GM Sundararajan Kidambi to volunteer at an outreach program started by Chess Without Borders

In 2008 Chess Without Borders donated chess sets and a textbook to a school for children of factory workers in Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh in India. District 220 alum Nina Sethi, who was volunteering in India at the time, was invited by the founder of the school, Mr Jay Galla, as a consultant to evaluate effectiveness and student learning with the existing school curriculum. Nina recommended more enrichment programs for students.  She asked Chess Without Borders for donations of chess sets and textbooks to start a chess program in the school. The program has now been adopted by GM Kidambi from India who lives an hour away from this school. GM Kidambi was visiting Chicago when he heard about Chess Without Borders and he has volunteered to teach at this school. We are indebted to GM Kidambi for his generosity and spirit of service.

Emmy Nomination for “ A Future for Meher”

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences have nominated the documentary “A Future for Meher” which chronicles the efforts made by our chess students, parents, teachers and community for an Emmy Award.

“A Future for Meher” is a testament to the generosity of our growing chess community and the hundreds of volunteers who gave their time and energy for a girl on the other side of the world.

In 2009, Good Shepherd Hospital honored Chess Without Borders with an Unsung Hero Award for its humanitarian work. Over the last 3 years students from District 220, St Anne’s, Elgin Academy, Quest Academy, District 26 and the Barrington Community have raised $26,000 to provide medical services for a little girl living in the slums of India

And the efforts continue. Recent graduate Austen Murrow returned from Delhi after spending 3 months serving in Delhi strengthening the link between our community and a community filled with children like Meher.

Diversity of Chess Players

Meet Sherwin Chan, an MBA students at Northern illinois University. He has been coming to the St Matthew’s chess tournament for the last 2 years because, “I know when I play at these tournaments my entry fees are helping some charity”. The chess program started by Rishi Sethi 11 years ago was founded on a mission to combine chess education with service and philanthropy. This continues to thrive today. Over $60,000 has been donated to worldwide humanitarian programs.
